Regional Attractions

​Newport, RI   (44 miles from Mystic)

 

  • Famous for its historic seaside Mansions built by the very wealthy before the days of income tax.  Several are open for tours.

 

  • The Cliff Walk is a path along the ocean in the front yards of many of the mansions.  Some of it has fallen victim to years of cliff erosion, but it is still a very popular destination in Newport.

 

  • There are many shops and restaurants on the waterfront of this very popular boating harbor.  This area was once the home of America’s Cup sailing for several years.

​Block Island, RI   (Ferry is 36 miles from Mystic)

 

  • A great Day Trip - This little island has a bustling harbor with shops and restaurants, and it is only 30 minutes from Point Judith, RI by high-speed ferry.

 

  •  It offers mopeds or car rentals to explore the island and lighthouses before grabbing some lunch at one of the many good choices.

​Essex, CT   (28 miles from Mystic)

 

  • The Steam Train and River Cruise - is a very popular attraction that offers rides along and on the Connecticut River.  This is a full size passenger train and steam locomotive that connects up river with a paddle wheeler riverboat.

 

  • The Connecticut River Museum - is located in the village of Essex on the banks of the river.  It tells the history of the river from its source near the Canadian border, along the border of New Hampshire and Vermont, and through Massachusetts and Connecticut to its mouth on Long Island Sound in Old Saybrook.
